Paprika vs. Recipe Keeper — which recipe organizer should you buy in 2026?

The short answer

Choose Paprika for the cheapest iPhone entry ($4.99), a strong web importer, and pantry tracking. Choose Recipe Keeper for scanning cookbooks and handwritten cards, nutrition search, Instagram and TikTok import, and a free tier to try first. Both plan meals, build aisle-sorted lists, and run on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows.

The short answer

Paprika and Recipe Keeper are the two most established recipe organizers, and they’re closer than most head-to-heads. Both import from recipe websites, plan meals weekly or monthly, build a shopping list grouped by aisle, scale servings, convert units, and run on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows, with each platform bought separately.

The differences are in the details. Paprika is cheaper to start on iPhone ($4.99 versus a $19.99 Pro upgrade), has one of the best built-in-browser importers, and tracks your pantry. Recipe Keeper scans cookbooks, magazines, PDFs, and handwritten recipes with OCR. It also imports from Instagram and TikTok, stores nutrition information you can search by, and has a free tier to try before paying. If your collection is mostly web recipes, Paprika is the easy pick. If it’s a box of family recipe cards, Recipe Keeper is.

A note on Paprika 4

Paprika 4 entered open beta on Sept. 28, 2026. The announcement lists recipe scanning, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube import, clipboard import, nutritional analysis using USDA data, and family sharing. Those would close most of the gaps in the table above. It also says that after the beta, “premium features will require a subscription.” No price has been published. If you’re buying today, you’re buying Paprika 3, and the table reflects that.

What does each one cost for a real household?

Both apps charge per platform, so the total depends on your devices. These use the prices listed above, as of Oct 2026. Recipe Keeper’s Windows upgrade price wasn’t shown on its Microsoft Store listing, so that cell stays open.

Your devicesPaprika 3Recipe Keeper
iPhone only$4.99Free tier, or $19.99 Pro
iPhone + Mac$34.98$49.98
iPhone + Windows PC$4.99 + $29.99 = $34.98$19.99 + Windows upgrade (price not shown)

Neither app’s site says whether one purchase covers a second family member’s separate Apple ID, so check that inside the app before buying for two people.

Where Paprika is better

Web import. Paprika’s built-in browser is the gold standard for “find a recipe, tap a button.” You browse the web inside the app and, in Paprika’s words, “tap a button to download the recipe” (paprikaapp.com). The Safari extension and bookmarklet do the same from outside the app.

Pantry. Paprika tracks which ingredients you have and when they expire. Recipe Keeper doesn’t describe a pantry feature.

Planning flexibility. Paprika plans by day, week, or month and saves good weeks as reusable menus. It also exports your meal plan to Calendar and your grocery list to Reminders, which helps if your household already lives in those apps.

Lower starting price. For an iPhone-only cook, a one-time $4.99 is hard to beat.

Where Recipe Keeper is better

Scanning paper recipes. Recipe Keeper’s OCR scans from the camera, from saved photos, and from PDFs, and turns them into editable text. That’s the feature to buy it for if you’re digitizing a cookbook shelf or a grandparent’s handwritten cards. Paprika 3’s listing doesn’t include photo scanning.

Social media recipes. Recipe Keeper’s site says you can “search for recipes on the web, Instagram and TikTok and add them straight to your collection.”

Nutrition. You can add nutrition information to recipes and search your collection by nutritional amounts.

Sharing and printing. A shared family recipe collection, sharing to social networks, and PDF cookbooks with a cover page and table of contents. Paprika prints well too (including index-card formats), but Recipe Keeper does more with sharing.

Trying before buying. Recipe Keeper’s iPhone app is free to download, with the Pro upgrade as an in-app purchase. Paprika’s iPhone app is paid upfront. Its free version exists only on Android.

If what you actually want is to change recipes

Neither Paprika nor Recipe Keeper describes changing a recipe from a plain-language request. Both let you scale servings and edit the text by hand. If your real problem is “this recipe is almost right” — feed six instead of two, no buttermilk, make it vegetarian — that’s a different job. Sous Chef is an iPhone app built for it: it edits the ingredient lines and the steps that depend on them, marks what changed, and keeps the original. It has no meal planner or grocery list, so it complements an organizer rather than replacing one. Free to download and try; heavier AI use may need a subscription later. Common questions

Is Paprika or Recipe Keeper cheaper?

On iPhone, Paprika is cheaper: $4.99 versus a $19.99 Recipe Keeper Pro upgrade, as of Oct 2026. On Mac, both are $29.99. Both charge separately per platform, so the gap grows with each extra device type you own.

Can Recipe Keeper import my Paprika recipes?

Yes. Recipe Keeper’s Google Play listing names Paprika Recipe Manager among the apps it can transfer recipes from, alongside MasterCook, BigOven, Pepperplate, and others.

Which one can scan handwritten recipes?

Recipe Keeper. It uses OCR on camera shots, saved photos, and PDFs, including handwritten recipes and cookbook pages. Paprika 3’s listing doesn’t include photo scanning, though the Paprika 4 beta lists recipe scanning.

Do both work on Android and Windows?

Yes. Both have iPhone/iPad, Android, Mac, and Windows versions, and both sell each platform separately.

Is Paprika switching to a subscription?

Paprika 3 is a one-time purchase per platform. For Paprika 4, now in open beta, Paprika says premium features will require a subscription after the beta. Pricing hasn’t been announced.

Which has a better cooking mode?

They’re similar. Both keep the screen awake, let you check off ingredients, and highlight the current step. Paprika auto-detects cook times in the directions so you can tap to start a timer. Recipe Keeper adds adjustable text size and hands-free cooking through its Alexa skill (English only).
