Sous Chef is built to be useful without asking much of you. This policy explains what data we process, why we process it, who receives it, how long we keep it, and the controls available to you.
Data we collect
We process recipe content you choose to import, create, save, edit, or delete, including ingredients, instructions, notes, source URLs, and your requested changes. Guest use is linked to a random device identifier. If you sign in, Auth0 handles the login and Sous Chef receives a stable account identifier and the token claims needed to authenticate you. We do not receive or store your password.
We also process limited operational information needed to secure and run the service, such as tool names, request outcomes, approximate timing, pseudonymous account or guest identifiers, and error details. Our hosting and security providers may process ordinary connection data such as IP address, browser type, and request timestamps.
How we use data
We use this data only to provide the features you request, keep saved recipes private, apply and validate recipe edits, prevent abuse, troubleshoot failures, and maintain the reliability and security of Sous Chef. We do not sell personal data, serve ads, or use Sous Chef data for behavioral advertising.
ChatGPT, Claude, and AI processing
ChatGPT and Claude keep the conversation. Sous Chef receives only the recipe details and requests their model sends to our tools, not a copy of your full conversation. The chat provider handles your conversation under its own terms and privacy policy.
When a feature needs AI generation, the minimum recipe content and instruction required for that request may be sent through OpenRouter to the selected model provider. We do not use that content to train our own models.
Service providers and recipients
We use Auth0 for authentication, Convex for application data, Cloudflare for hosting and delivery, and OpenRouter and its selected model provider for AI-backed requests. These providers receive only the data needed to perform their role. We may also disclose data if required by law, to protect users or the service, or as part of a business transfer subject to appropriate safeguards.
Retention
Guest and account recipes, edit snapshots, and related session data remain until you delete the recipe or account, or ask us to delete them. Authentication records remain until they expire or are revoked. Operational and security audit records are retained for no longer than 12 months unless a longer period is needed to investigate abuse, meet a legal obligation, or resolve a support request. Backups may persist for up to 30 additional days.
Your controls
You can use core recipe features without an account, delete recipes, sign out, disconnect Sous Chef from your chat provider, and delete your account in the iOS app. You may also ask us to access, correct, export, or delete data associated with your account. Depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights.
Children and sensitive data
Sous Chef is not directed to children under 13. Do not send passwords, payment-card data, government identifiers, protected health information, or other sensitive data through a recipe or edit request.
